About Joe:
What made you want to join Coastway Hospital Radio For Brighton?
I moved to Brighton from Eastbourne and saw the website. I was very impressed with Coastway’s commitment to diversity in their programming. I have previous experience in hospital radio and enjoyed it so wanted to try somewhere new and carry on presenting radio shows.
What do you like best about Coastway?
I was overjoyed when meeting Pete Sanders (the station manager) when he told me that there’s no playlists for shows, meaning that listeners get a good variety of music, presenting styles, topics and opinions. I’ve met other presenters who have all been friendly, helpful and good at what they do.
How did you get into presenting?
I’m obsessed with music and consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about it, so I thought I’d try out radio presenting. I started off on student radio on BURST (Brighton University Radio Station) and loved doing it as soon as I started. I enjoy the craft of presenting my show, and am always keen to improve the listening experience for people by listening to feedback.
Who/what are your biggest influence(s)?
In terms of music, I’d list my favourite artists as Sufjan Stevens, The Beatles, Radiohead, Pavement, Cocteau Twins and Tom Waits, although there are many many more that I love. In terms of radio, my favourite stations are BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 4. I like to think of my show as a mix between the two stations. Presenters I like include Shaun Keaveny, Huey Morgan, Russell Brand, Jarvis Cocker, Cerys Matthews, Radcliffe and Maconie, Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq.
What have been your biggest achievements?
Not sure how to answer this one! I made a short comedy film when I was younger which I’m quite proud of. I also value my radio shows and work hard on them so would also rate those as achievements I suppose. I’m not really a fan of selling myself, yuck!
Name a key tune that you love or inspired you?
I think I’ll go for Long, Long, Long by The Beatles. I’d describe this song as an astoundingly beautiful hidden gem from The White Album. I only really got into music properly around the age of 13 or 14, when I started listening to Radiohead, The Beatles and The Velvet Underground. I remember listening to Beatles albums on my MiniDisc player and finding amazing tracks which really moved me. Long, Long, Long is a fairly atypical Beatles track though, since it’s a haunting George Harrison tune featuring guitar, heavily reverbed drums and a striking organ outro. It’s one of my favourite songs ever, and helped inspire my love of music when I was a wee bairn.
What do you do when you are not broadcasting?
I work at St. Peter’s House library, the Arts and Humanities library for the University of Brighton. Feel free to stop by and say hello! I also review gigs for Latest7, part of the free Latest property magazine you see scattered around Brighton. I spend a lot of my spare time listening to music, going to gigs and spending time with friends.
