Steve Hanmer

How would you describe your programme?

My show is pretty random. It doesn’t have a name, because every week there is something completely different with completely different people and completely different music. For an hour a week everyone can expect anything – including me!

What made you want to join Coastway Hospital Radio For Brighton?

I’ve always been interested in radio, since I heard a presented on Southern FM break the rules and get cut off air. I loved it. I loved that was doing what people wanted, no matter what and that thousands and thousands of people were feeling for him as the forbidden song got cut off air. The interested died down for a bit, but on a whim after listening to BBC Radio 1 I fell in love with radio again.

What do you like best about Coastway?

The people. Coastway has such a broad range of presenters from all walk of life and everyone at the station will look out for each other and support each other no matter what. The freedom to play anything we want, without a playlist. This makes every show individual to the presenter and you really get a feel for their personalities, which makes it a much more intimate listening experience.

How did you get into presenting?

On a whim, I googled ‘Brighton Hospital Radio’ and found Coastway sitting there at the top. Now 2 years later, I’ve hosted several shows on the station, produced a couple more and am in love with presenting.

Who/what are your biggest influence(s)?

I’ve listened to every minute of The Chris Moyles Show on BBC Radio 1 since October 2009. So I think it’s fair to say that Chris is my biggest influence when it comes to radio. The fact he’s been in the position he’s in just shows that he knows radio inside out and there no better way to learn the craft than to listen to an expert.

What have been your biggest achievements?

In terms of radio, presenting the Breakfast Show on Coastway, 2 hours a day, 5 days a week for a few months. That was amazing. Producing the mammoth show that was our Royal Roadshow was another massive achievement for me.
Elsewhere, passing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award was one of proudest moments of my life.

Name a key tune that you love or inspired you

I’ve spent a good 15/20 minutes just staring at this question and I can’t think of anything particular song that have really inspired me, but I’ve whacked my iPhone on shuffle and these are the first three songs that came up which I know I love.

‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.’ – Noah and the Whale
‘The Flood’ – Take That
‘Sing’ – My Chemical Romance

What do you do when you are not broadcasting?

Aside work, I’m currently trying to write a book! I’ve written a short story which is available online and writing is a massive passion of mine.
