Tim Griffiths
How would you describe your programme?
All the latest movie news and opinions as well as a great selection of music including ska, funk, indie and anything else I come across! We also run down the DVD and UK box office charts every week and tell you which new releases to go see and those to steer clear of!
What made you want to join Coastway Hospital Radio For Brighton?
Get back into something I enjoyed and meet new people. Oh and to subject the patients to my musical collection!
What do you like best about Coastway?
How friendly , relaxed and welcoming everyone is!
How did you get into presenting?
I took a wrong turn at a freshers fair in my first week of university – I was looking for the nightclub production team! A long conversation about an obscure ska band called the flying marrows later and before I knew it I was presenting a breakfast show on student radio and hosting the sport show for 5 hours every Saturday.
Who/what are your biggest influence(s)?
Broadcasting wise – Steve Lamacq Danny Baker, Billy Reeves, Dan Shaw
Musically – The Smiths, Gene, David Bowie, Queen, Muse, Eric Clapton.
Life wise – a teacher at my first school who said in an assembly ‘You always regret what you don’t do in life.’ It’s not been a bad mantra thus far.
What have been your biggest achievements?
Getting lost on a mapreading course. Getting my degree. Beating my dad at swimming.
Name a key tune that you love or inspired you
I have two. (Well I’ve narrowed it down to two from 435) .
1) – A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed – Theaudience – It’s not very well known but this was written about supporting Brentford and is very apt to life.
2) Bring Me Sunshine – Morcambe and Wise – If you don’t smile listening to this you just can’t be human!
What are your favourite films?
I have so many I could list but I’ve trimmed it to 5 here.
1) The Right Stuff- An epic tale of the first spacemen and test pilots. A great story of a group of true pioneers and visually stunning.
2) The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou- Wes Anderson is one of my favourite directors our there, some find him too bizarre but this is a true masterpiece combining a gripping narrative based on revenge and atonement and a fantastic soundtrack featuring Sigur Rios and David Bowie.
3) Top Gun- This film has it all, Thrilling action sequences, Volleyball and a compelling central relationship between Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, his co-pilot Goose and between Maverick and Charlie his civilian instructor.
4) Zulu- The film that made Michael Cain a star and featuring fantastic vistas of the African plains and a victory against the odds.
5) Blade Runner- I love a sci-fi dystopia and this is the best of them all. Based on the Phillip K Dick book ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’ featuring Harrison Fords Deckard and the film asks several searching questions regarding what makes us human.
Honourable mentions go to Wayne’s World, Inception, A muppet Christmas Carol, Cool Runnings The Blues Brothers, Inception, Silent Running, Die Hard, The Great Escape, The Godfather, V for Vendetta, The Third Man, The Ipcress File, Casablanca, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Dogma, Notting Hill, Escape to Victory and The Royal Tenembaums ,The Italian Job and all Star Trek films!
What do you do when you are not broadcasting?
By Day I’m an Underwriter for an Insurance firm, In my free time I play volleyball, support Brentford FC, Love Rugby League (I’m involved with the Sussex Merlins club) and pretty much any other sport obsess over music and I Snorkel Dive.
